Option 1: Harbour Cruise with Dolphins

Enjoy the most spectacular coastal scenery - rugged cliff faces and dramatic panoramic views will take your breath away. Passenger groups are kept small so that you have more room to move around the boat, and enjoy your 2 hour cruise without overcrowding or missing dolphin sightings due to a shortage of viewing space. Plus, the luxurious and comfortable boat has a low-lying profile which means you get closer to the dolphins and other wildlife!

The harbour cruise operator enjoys a 98% success rate in encountering Hector’s dolphins in their natural environment, all year round. As the world’s smallest and rarest oceanic dolphins, which are completely wild, it is not possible to guarantee encounters.

Note: In keeping with environmental and ecological best practice, we view the dolphins from the boat rather than swim with them.

Option 2: Alpaca Farm Tour

Set in a beautiful harbour on the slopes of an extinct volcano and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills, the alpaca farm is near the historic seaside village of Akaroa. The panoramic views of Akaroa harbour and the rolling hills and peaks of the surrounding valleys are absolutely phenomenal!

After a brief introduction to alpacas and their unique and quirky habits you are able to view the alpaca fleece on display and you get to feel the incredible cashmere like softness of superfine alpaca whilst learning about their amazing qualities. You then proceed to walk through the alpaca herd where you can enjoy interacting with these gentle animals while they graze contentedly in their natural habitat. Even get to feed the mothers with their young by their side - providing some amazing close up alpaca contact and great photos for lasting memories of your visit.

Option 3: Wild Penguin Safari Colony

Be greeted by the farm’s, friendly pet sheep and see White-Flippered penguins as the people of Pohatu monitor nesting sites. This is the only place in New Zealand you can easily see penguins' gathering and socializing on the water. You may even be lucky enough to see rehabilitation efforts such as supplemental feedings and swim therapy!

Pohatu have been conserving the Little Penguins for over 30 years and have 4 conservation awards for their efforts in penguin conservation, protection and monitoring. Francis and Shireen Helps have worked over the last three decades protecting White-flippered Penguins (Eudyptula minor albosignata), Canterbury’s own variant of Australasian Little Penguin. Importantly, spending time with Pohatu helps the preservation of these beautiful birds for future generations!

Note: The penguins at Flea Bay are wild; therefore, your chances of seeing them throughout the year varies by season. Please click here for more information >>

We just returned from a really great day with Nicole, Gary and Maossie tours. As guides, they knew lots about the region, the country and the Lord of the Rings filming sites that were our destination. As owner-hosts they were cheerful, friendly, calm, and ready for anything. They kept us well fed with lots of well planned stops for food, photos and facilities. The bus was clean, comfortable with free wifi and USB power at every seat. Lunch at Mt Potts Lodge was surprisingly tasty & intricate. Meeting Clydesdales, goats and sheep was delightful. If we were in Christchurch longer, we’d do another day trip with them and will strongly recommend them to others. This was exactly what we wanted from a day trip out of Christchurch - an intro to life in the agricultural region, big mountain vistas and some LOTR sites as seasoning           Kate H.

This was such a great day! Gary and Nicole were welcoming, attentive, and thoughtful. It was evident that they wanted us all to have a great experience with them. Even the picnic lunch was delicious! Once at the farm, Erin's experience handling those beautiful horses was clear - she was great! You undoubtedly want to book a tour with Maossie Tours! You won't regret it.          Melissa.
